Winter Shipping Of Live Food Cultures - Updated October 2018

This time of year temperature is a consideration when ordering live foods through the mail. The starter cultures I sell are very hardy and can take temperatures down to the low thirties without harm. They just go to sleep and wake up when they warm up. Freezing solid though will kill them. No matter which shipping method is used, someone must be there when they are delivered to bring them indoors. If you will not be home when they are expected, please let me know and I'll ship to a friend or relative's house or to your workplace where someone will be there to bring them in out of the cold. All auctions come with tracking and delivery confirmation.

If you are unsure which shipping method you should use please contact me before bidding or buying. I do combine shipping costs on multiple item orders and pass that entire savings on to the buyer.

Option One - Basic Insulation - First Class Mail Shipping - Included In Purchase Price Or Specified In Auction

Your cultures are secured inside a Tyvek wrapper, which is then put in the mailer. This minimal level of insulation is included free with all orders. If your temps are just a couple degrees either side of freezing this standard free insulation works fine as long as the cultures are brought inside immediately when they arrive!

Option Two - More Insulation - Priority Mail - $4.50 Over The First Class Mail Price

To calculate your cost for this option take the auction shipping cost, for example $2.75, and add $4.50 to it. For this example that would make your total shipping $7.25.

Your order ships Priority Mail in a box lined with 1/2" insulating styrofoam. This is better insulation than option one, and is adequate if sustained temps along the way and at the destination are not too far below freezing and you are sure your culture will be brought straight in on delivery. The faster shipping time and Priority handling also mean your culture(s) spend less time potentially exposed to the weather in transit.

Option Three - More Insulation - Priority Mail - 40/72 Hour Heat Pack Included - $6.00 Over The First Class Mail Price.

To calculate your cost for this option take the auction shipping cost, for example $2.75, and add $6.00 to it. For this example that would make your total shipping $8.75.

This is option two on steroids with a 40 or 72 hour heat pack included. This is necessary when temps along the way or at the destination are well below freezing. This package does very well in some pretty harsh weather. If temperatures are really low as in or near single digits, then you might want to consider looking for a break in the weather even with this option. Email me and we'll look at it.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have questions about this or any other aspect of my cultures or other items, and thanks for looking!
